Xeni Lulua
Hello, my name is Xeni Lulua I am from Xeni Gwet’in First Nations. I was raised in Nemiah Valley and lived there until I was 16 when I moved to Williams Lake for my last two years of high school. I was raised by my parents Sharon Baptiste and Edmund Lulua. They taught me all about our culture and traditional ways growing up. I am not fluent in my language but I do understand quite a lot of it when I hear it being spoken. I just can not speak it that well. One of my goals in life is to become fluent in my language, then hoping to be able to teach it in schools once I am done my journey of becoming a teacher. It has taken me a good while to get to the point of knowing what I truly want to do in school. I first started out at TRU as a biology student then I jumped from that into business, now after being in that program for 1-2 years I have switched again to the arts program. I am hoping to be able to finish the arts degree and then my plan is to go into the teaching program but I guess we will see how I feel in 4 years. I do not only go to TRU for schooling purposes. Last year I would go in for my mentor hours at the gathering place on campus (house 5). This year I am not a mentor but I was hired as the cultural ambassador for house 5. I am excited to start the new semester and begin in my role as the cultural ambassador because I get to do a lot of things I already love to do while I am in this position. I enjoy different cultural events such as powwows, and stick games which I will be able to help out with running the powwow and also get to host stick games at house 5. Some of my other interests include sewing, beading, painting, and I also love riding horses. While I can put on workshops for the other things I like to do, it is very hard for me to go about riding horses while I'm in Kamloops. This has probably been one of the biggest struggles for me while living in Kamloops is being away from my horses and my family. The family part has become a little easier as I have built a really amazing support system down here. While I have been in Kamloops I have gained not just friends but family.
