Kym Koster, Teacher
My name is Kym Koster, and I am a proud Secwépemc member of the Stswecem’c Xget’tem First Nation (Dog Creek/Canoe Creek). I currently live in Kamloops, BC, with my beautiful daughter, our dog Lucky, and our two cats, Poppy and Mooney. I enjoy spending time with my family back in my home territory—it is grounding for me to be out on the land and to continue learning alongside my loved ones.
In 2021, I graduated from the Bachelor of Education program at Thompson Rivers University. During my studies, I was honoured to be part of the inaugural Indigenous Cohort in 2019, where I completed the program alongside a small group of Indigenous students. Being part of this cohort provided me with a strong circle of support and a safe learning environment that felt like home.
Currently, I teach at Sk’elep School of Excellence, a BC First Nation Independent School located on Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc Territory in Kamloops. I began teaching at Sk’elep in September 2021 and am now entering my fifth year with the school. Before that, I worked as a Teacher on Call (TOC) for School District 73 (Kamloops and surrounding area). While TOC work offered valuable experience, I found the unpredictability of assignments stressful and was grateful to transition into a more stable and connected teaching role at Sk’elep.
Over the years, I have taught both primary and intermediate grades, and I find my greatest fulfillment in teaching the higher primary and lower intermediate levels. I enjoy working with the dedicated staff and students at Sk’elep and feel proud to be part of a supportive school community.
In addition to classroom teaching, I have also taken on the role of basketball coach at Sk’elep School. Last year, I enjoyed supporting our students in this new capacity, and I look forward to expanding our sports programming this year as we join more events through School District 73’s athletic program. My goal is to help grow a well-rounded, inclusive sports program that supports student development.
