Lisa Scott, Electrician
My name is Lisa Scott. Finding myself a single mother at the age of 21, I wanted to find employment that would allow me to provide a better future for my son and I. With a limited skill set I didn’t know what to do or how to begin. In 2001 I received a temporary job offer for a mill shut down and this is when I first was introduced to the trade/industrial industry. After hearing about all the job opportunities available, and the financial independence from the trades, I knew this was the future I wanted.
My journey into the trades began in 2002 when I enrolled at the College of New Caledonia for the 6 month pre apprenticeship electrical program. I applied for a student loan to cover all of my school and living costs. Through my apprentice schooling I received scholarship and bursary funds that also helped me get through financially. I was fortunate to find work right after I completed the pre apprenticeship course and I’ve never had trouble finding employment since. I finished my apprenticeship in 2008 becoming a Redseal journeywoman electrician. I’m extremely glad I choose a trade as it has been very rewarding and full of opportunities over the years.
Currently I’m employed for the School District #28 Quesnel as a maintenance electrician. I also sit on the Contracting Out, Negotiations, Social and Nominations Committees for my union local CUPE 4990.
I am very active in my community as I am the president of the Quesnel Lacrosse Association and hold a Vice chair position for the Great White North Lacrosse Commission. I also coach lacrosse, run the Spirit of lacrosse program in Quesnel that is sponsored by the British Columbia Lacrosse Association (BCLA) and the Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity& Recreational Council (ISPARC).
Recently, I participated in a regional training session sponsored by the Industry Training Authority (ITA) and the British Columbia Center For Woman In The Trades (BCCWITT) and became a BCCWITT Regional Representative.
As of July 31, 2020 I now have a 1 year board member position for the College of New Caledonia.
Being a woman in trades hasn’t been an easy journey, it’s defiantly had its highs and lows over the last 18 yrs, but over all it has been an amazing career path and helped me create the life I always wanted for my family.
