Rakiya Larkin, Manager, Social Determinants of Health

Rakiya Larkin is from the traditional territories of the Kwakwaka'wakw, speaking peoples from Alert Bay, which is located at the northern tip of Vancouver Island, Blackfoot from the Piikani Nation in Brocket Alberta and is of German, Romanian and Jewish descent. Since Rakiya was 8-years old she has been travelling and public speaking, across Canada, educating all Canadians on the realities and social determinants of health that affect Indigenous peoples, land, community, and culture, in hope to support to bridge the gap.

Rakiya received her Bachelor of Business Administration, Leadership and Human Resources Major from Camosun College, in what is known as Victoria, today. Rakiya has an extensive background in community care and activism, provincially, nationally, and internationally. She has worked in the BC Public Service in various ministries in Human Resources, Change Management and Cultural Safety, Reconciliation and Diversity and Inclusion. Currently, she works for the First Nations Health Authority and has had the honor of working for FNHA for the last 3.5 years. Her current role is Manager, Social Determinants of Health within the provincial Mental Health Team. Having the honour of working for and with First Nations across this province, has been rewarding, has nurtured her spirit and has brought her back home in many ways.

She is looking forward to hearing about the mountains you will move, the discourse and the narrative you will shift and the relationships that will be created. Her hands are raised up to you all on your journeys. ǧilakas’la (thank you).
