Christine Johnston, Licensed Practical Nurse
I am 55 years old and I work as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Becoming a nurse is a second career for me. I started my work career at the age of 14, working in a variety of food service industries while attending school. At 20 years of age, I started my first career job working in a Pulp and Paper Mill in my hometown. I worked in a variety of departments including labor pools, food services and production jobs. This job was interesting due to the variety of skills I got to learn, as well as opening the work force for women in a predominately male environment. My Mother was one of nine women who were hired back in 1968 in a production-type job setting. She always told me “you can do anything” and I use this motto every day.
At 38 years old, I returned to school to train for my second career as a Nurse. I was a single parent of 3 kids at this career pathway. I managed to juggle a full-time job, attended day and evening school just to qualify to apply for the nursing program. When I was accepted into the program, I moved to a different city to attend College and I graduated in 2005. I again returned to extend my nursing skills and enrolled in a wound care program which today is the focus of my current job.
If you are interested in medicine and helping people, I would strongly recommend looking at the multiple choices that pertain to Nursing. It has been a gratifying and satisfying profession.
